I know this is an old post, but wanted to share something on this topic. It is annoying, any one of the lifts seems seems to be broken at least once a month.

I was just getting in the lift from the car park, and the door wasn't closing. It would almost close, but re-open, so the lift was going nowhere. I looked around, and noticed it was because a discarded packet of rizla had slid into the corner of the lift door frame. So, the sensor detected something there and didn't allow the door to close. I imagine this would've kept the lift stationary if anyone else had needed it.

As soon as I moved it out of the way, the door could close and up I went.
Next time anyone sees the lift stuck on your floor, maybe just look for any bits of litter in or around the door frame that could have the same effect.

I'm sure this isn't the only reason the lifts sometimes don't work, but at least we can look out for it!
