Not enough Bandwith

Postby Little Miss Naughty » Fri Feb 01, 2013 7:25 am

Hi there, as a new contributor, I was surprised that this forum was locked out a few days ago due to insufficient band with. Is this a regular occurrence?

No advertising please .
Its still quite rare to have the bandwidth restriction shutdown and although I DO miss the org , think I can survive without advertising

It happens at the end of nearly every month.

Who funds this site anyway?

funding= dot org =community = local Council and Surrey = Your rates.
BTW I'm a regular user of this forum - think its great and dont recal bandwidth problems of the frequency previous reader suggests . However , if it can be improved upon , then I'm fine with that .

Think I remember a priblem last year with the site closed down, just for a couple of days though.
Not a usual problem.
Are new members still required to buy a round of drinks before they are allowed to post on here?

It has to be funded some way. I'd rather that than have a subscription based service - whilst i'd happily pay a nominal amount, charges would be a great barrier to entry to many and hence the usefulness of the org wold evaporate.

If the restriction only occurs rarely at the end of the month, then maybe there is no necessity to worry too much at the moment. As I am the only one to bring this up, it seems it hasn't been a problem in the past as no one else has mentioned this. If changing the font etc uses up more, I am happy to refrain from this. Anyway we have a short month this month so all should be well for now,

It's occurred a bit more recently than in the past. If this is a sign that the forums is getting busier I see this as a good thing.
An occasional hiccup is ot going to deter those of us who've been members for a while, but it will definitely put off someone who follows a link to the forum for the first time and gete the unavailable message. It will put them off even more if they try again on a couple of other occasions.
So, from the point of view of building the forum it is a serious problem indeed.

As for your fonts - it won't affect anything at all, bandwidth wise - changing any attribute is the same as adding a few letters before and a few letters after the phrase you have emboldened or whatever.

However, posting in big fonts or bold fontsl, like typing in CAPITALS, is looked upon as the equivalent of shouting. So it's great if you want to add emphasis to a particular word or statement. Posting whole posts in large colourful fonts therefore looses impact and, worse, it can give the impression the poster is full of their own importance. This is almost certainly the opposite of the desired effect of the poster who is just trying to be jovial!

Definitely not. This is a free forum provided by a very generous individual. I can only praise him/her/them. Thanks.

Advertising, maybe - if it's a problem and keeps it going.

Subs - agree a disincentive.

Nb - Deja vu - have we had the conversation before.
