Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, UK.

Walton-on-Thames, has an interesting history. Walking through the town, taking the time to stop and look, reveals many clues to Walton's village past.

As previously mentioned the the name of the town - Walton - is though to have meant "town of the Britons" suggesting that  a pre-Saxon settlement existed here. In ancient times the parish of Walton-on-Thames was part of the was part of the hundred of Elmbridge, a hundred being an administrative area of a shire.

Local publications suggest that up until the 1850's the parish was around 7000 acres, but sparely populated by a predominantly agricultural community.

In 1974 the Urban District of Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge was was merged with the Urban District of Esher. The boundary of the new borough coincided with the ancient hundred, thus it was named the borough of Elmbridge.

Some of the notable features from the towns past are outlined in the various articles on the site.
