Elmgrove Recreation Ground, on Highfield Road, is one of the closest proper green spaces to central Walton, combining traditional and natural play with outdoor sport rather than being a single-purpose park for one activity alone.

Facilities

Elmbridge Borough Council's own listing confirms a football pitch, bowls, four tennis courts and both traditional and natural play areas. Basketball isn't on site but is available at the neighbouring Walton Youth Centre on Elm Grove, so it's worth knowing the two facilities sit next to each other rather than turning up expecting a basketball court inside the park itself. Football and tennis can both be booked in advance through the council's sports facility booking system.

A former home of Walton Casuals FC

The park has a real football history behind it. Walton Casuals FC, whose roots trace back to a Sunday team formed by ex-servicemen just after the Second World War, became an official Saturday club in 1948 and took up a pitch at Elm Grove Recreation Ground that year, playing in the Surrey Intermediate (Central) League. The club had a genuinely successful run from this ground, winning promotion to the league's Premier Division in 1952-53 and finishing runners-up three times, in 1954-55, 1956-57 and 1964-65, a solid record for a club playing out of an ordinary council recreation ground rather than a dedicated football venue. When the league they played in disbanded in 1965, the club moved on, eventually settling at what became Waterside Stadium in 1969, but for seventeen years this ordinary recreation ground was a proper football club's home. Walton Casuals FC itself no longer exists, the club was dissolved in 2022 after decades playing elsewhere in the area, which makes this quiet recreation ground the surviving physical link to a club that outlasted its own final home ground.

The ground is open for access on foot 24 hours a day. It's the kind of park a local resident would use weekly rather than a visitor would specifically travel to see, which is exactly the gap it fills well.

Elmgrove works well as a quick stop on a longer walk around central Walton rather than a destination to plan a whole visit around, and pairs naturally with the Walton Trail's town-centre routes if you're already exploring on foot.
